~~ It is time to renew our Cat Friendly Practice Certification. The certification demonstrates to cats and their people that the emotional well being at Southfork Animal Hospital is important. We encourage owners to use pheromones and treats in the carriers at home. Once in the clinic, there is a cat only entry and sitting area. The waiting time is minimal as they are ushered into our “Cat Room” right away. We have a Feliway phermone diffuser in the exam room and the table is covered with a cushy blanket. The door of the carrier is opened and the cat can come our only if they want to! No dragging the cat from the carrier! We examine the cat where they choose. Sometimes it is in the carrier with the top off. Sometimes it is on the counter, bench or scale. We do not “scruff”cats here. Vaccines are accomplished with minimal restraint. Procedures and blood draws are done in the exam room because cats are more stressed if they have to get used to a new area like the laboratory or treatment room. We may ask owners to leave the room during the procedure for their own mental well being!
I am enjoying the recent articles from Dr Marty Becker on fear free veterinary visits. Dogs benefit from gentle handling, treats and pheromones too. Look for more information on that topic but rest assured, Southfork Animal Hospital is already on board!
